Global Connections in Education 2008

Out next interactive project on Global Connections 2008 is Digital Story Telling. Digital storytelling is a fantastic way to engage students, teachers and just about anyone else who has ever wanted to be the next Ken Burns or Steven Spielberg. There are many different definitions of "digital storytelling," but in general, all of them revolve around the idea of combining the longstanding art of telling stories with any of a variety of available multimedia tools, including graphics, audio, video animation, and Web publishing. You can use video or photos to tell your story along with music and narrative with photostory or imovie.

There are several resources that describe digital story telling, how to get started and the educational value. One of the most comprehensive is Educational Uses of Digital Storytelling from University of Houston. There are steps for getting started and examples of digital stories. Another resource for digital storytelling is Teachers Telling Tales on Teacher Tube. These videos are good examples for what is possible.

In this activity you will tell your story about teaching, a real success story that you've experienced (fact or fiction). Remember that good stories have a turning point in the events so that there is a bit o suspense to the tale.

You can upload your story in the video or photo section of this ning.

The narration overlays typical flora and fauna to keep the children locked in then the settlement day drums an activities then modern and traditional mix accompanied by actual Garifuna music and ending in a modern African piece with the final shot of city of Dangriga. I also added for dessert a tourism video titled Belize and Garifuna music. It adds and embellishes the splendour of that wonderful tropical oasis. I hope to do a live video of a traditional Garifuna dance drum session in the future. I actually misssed out on a recent celebration at Hostos College , Bronx- for lack of equipment .

Hi all,

I posted my story on the videos section also.

I did not realize we needed a "works cited" part since I didn't notice for the other example stories. But just to make a comment on that: I used Google Images to get all my pictures, which came from many different websites found through Google. The factoids I posted are pretty common knowledge, so I don't think I need to cite sources for that.
However, here are some of the websites I utilized for background reading, again through Google, using key words "religion war":
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religious_war
http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/ethics/war/
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9502E5DE123DF934A357...

I'll post comments on videos directly. :)

Hi all,

I posted my Digital Story in the Videos section. I took the pictures with my digital camera and my story is based on my cultural experience at the Harlem Book Fair. I recommend everyone take a trip to this fair. You will be surprised as to how many of these writers will be willing to come to your school and talk about the writing process with your students. I hope you like it.

Thanks, Denise
